After nearly 4 decades of studying music (voice), operating and programming computers, earning a Master of Divinity and practicing pastoral counselling, I stumbled onto jewelry design.

This was not an intentional act.  In the summer of 2002, my husband bought me a beautiful pendant of very conservatively wrapped dichroic glass which I fell in love with on sight.

In 2003, my daughter’s friend, Laura, after repeatedly touting the virtues of  Star’s Beads, a local bead store, took us to see it.  Of course, I bought something.  And, of course, when Laura mentioned she had found great deals on the web, I had to look.

I found dichroic glass.

I searched until I found glass I loved (Linda Abbott’s glass, www.dichroicglass.net), and bought 3 pieces.  I hoped to make at least one additional presentable pendant for myself.  I used Linda’s book “Hot and Wired” to teach myself wire work.  She said start with square wire and a cabochon – so I wrapped a lumpy rock in round wire while I waited for square.  Then, too nervous to wrap a glass piece, I wrapped another lumpy rock with square wire.  Then I tackled the 3 pieces of glass I had ordered.

At the pediatrician’s office, someone wanted to buy the piece I was wearing.  In church, someone wanted me to make something for her.  The scan I sent to Linda Abbott elicited compliments (and started a lasting friendship).  And I was launched on my new venture.

I have sold at local shows, wholesale shows (winning the Chicago’s Choice award at the Beckman’s Handcrafted portion of the Chicago Gift Show twice).  My work is featured in the Best of American Jewelry Artists and Artisans published by Kennedy Publications in August 2007.

Although I still have a limited counselling practice, my passion is designing jewelry.
